The Gold Canyon Arts Council Presents the Canyon Sounds Artist Series 2008-2009

Unless otherwise noted, all concerts are on Friday evenings at 7:30 pm at the Gold Canyon United Methodist Church at 6640 South Kings Ranch Road in Gold Canyon. Eric Bibb

Born in 1951, Bibb is a native New Yorker with deep roots in the American blues and folk tradition. Young Eric was inspired and influenced by Odetta, Richie Havens, Pete Seeger, Earl Robinson, Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, Judy Collins, and many others. A performance by Eric Bibb is an enriching experience – both musically and spiritually. His music, like his personality, is intimate, assured and passionate.

Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble

This exciting ensemble, celebrating its 25th anniversary, delights audiences the world over with bright, infectious programs of percussive dance and traditional bluegrass music. Featuring clogging from southern Appalachia, stepdances from Ireland, England, and Canada, and hamboning, hoofin’, and early jazz tap of the American South, Footworks will perform its signature work, Incredible Feets.

St. Petersburg String Quartet

One of the world’s leading string quartets, the St. Petersburg String Quartet was founded as the Leningrad Quartet. The quartet blazed a trail through international chamber music competitions, winning first prizes at the All-Soviet Union String Quartet Competition, and several other major international competitions.

Mark Twain Alive

America’s greatest author and humorist is brought to life through the considerable talents of actor Mike Randall. Since 1972, this nationally acclaimed one-man Mark Twain stage production has charmed audiences throughout the United States and Canada. Appearing off-Broadway at New York City’s only dinner theatre, on college campuses, at dinner theatres, opera houses, churches, schools and in regional theatres, the show bursts forth with all the wit and wisdom that was the trademark of the great man himself.

Frederick Swann, Organist

Year of the Organ by inviting one of the world’s greatest organists, Frederick Swann, to perform on the church’s Rogers organ. Mr. Swann performs concerts throughout North America, Australia, Europe and the Far East. In one recent season, Swann performed more than 40 recitals, including special appearances at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, St. Paul’s Cathedral in London, and Passau Cathedral in Germany.

Quintet of the Americas

The quintet is one of the western hemisphere’s finest chamber ensembles. Long recognized as leading interpreters of folk and contemporary wind quintet music of the Americas, the quintet celebrates the 27th anniversary of its founding. The group’s mission is to broaden the knowledge and appreciation of woodwind chamber music from the western hemisphere by performing contemporary, classical and folk-derived music from the diverse cultural traditions of the Americas.

Presented by the Apache Junction Unified School District. All programs begin at 7 pm in the Performing Arts Center, 2525 South Ironwwod Drive. Doors open one hour in advance.
